Drama

★★★★★
Audacious, rich, strange, Bonello’s his giant tripartite structure of past, present and future, his best movie yet, invites us to test our thumb on the cutting edge of modernity and draw blood. He finds something exciting and erotic in this inscrutable danger… In movie terms, Bonello riffs a little on Lynch’s Mulholland Drive and Haneke’s Funny Games. There are some sensational setpieces here, the chemistry between Louis and Gabrielle is at its most transgressive… it’s such a luxurious cinematic experience.
The Guardian

★★★★★
The Beast is at once an anxiety-ridden romantic thriller and a conceptual cri de coeur about the possible end of humanity. Filled with the same impeccable sense of craft found in Saint Laurent and the rest of the director’s work, including stylish and fluid, aspect-ratio-switching photography
The Hollywood Reporter

★★★★
Bonello’s trippy Sci-Fi offers a Lynchian view of the past, present and future. A provocative piece of sci-fi that follows Twin Peaks: The Return down the rabbit hole of dream logic, spanning three time zones in a surreal but compelling examination of human relationships. The mood is strange and ethereal, drawing comparisons with Alain Resnais’ existential classic Last Year at Marienbad… Seydoux is a revelation.
Deadline

★★★★
The alluring duo of Seydoux and MacKay will boost the appeal of an uncompromising exploration, elegantly ringing changes on their characters’ different selves, with Seydoux’s imperious fin de siècle confidence contrasting with her nervous isolation as an outsider in LA, and MacKay smoothly fitting the period salon milieu, then crackling with compressed angst as Louis’s volatile 21st-century avatar.
